Morphology

Fusion of Selected Inflectional Formatives WALS Exclusively concatenative
Both nouns and verbs (and also modifiers) take affixes to show various grammatical features:

gæ.mæʒ de.zde.fjɪ.tlæ.teɪ
gamax dezdefyitlatae

gama-c dezde -fyitl-at-ae
people-PL at -whispered-PST-PL

people whispered
Exponence of Selected Inflectional Formatives WALS Monoexponential case
Inflectional Synthesis of the Verb WALS 4-5 categories per word
Gevey verbs can be inflected for the following:
» bound prepositions (all intransitive verbs must be accompanied by at least one preposition, either bound to an oblique object, or to the verb itself)
» conjugation type (which changes according to the grammatical and semantic content of the surrounding clause)
» tense
» subject 'status' (simple, internal, external, inanimate)
» subject number (singular, paucal, plural)
Locus of Marking in the Clause WALS Dependent marking
Gevey verbs are required to agree with the 'status' and number of their subjects, but not their direct objects; subjects (agents and experiencers) and direct objects (patients) are overtly marked - subjects take suffixes while direct objects are preceded by an accusative marker word.
Locus of Marking in Possessive Noun Phrases WALS Dependent marking
Posessor nouns and pronouns generally take the genetive case; Gevey can also use conjunctions to form more complex posessive noun phrases:

ʒæ.blæ.kæ χep məʊ.me.tɒ ten
xablaka qjep moemeto ten

xablaka qjep moemeto te-n
portrait of grandmother my-GEN

My grandmother's portrait

Reduplication WALS No productive reduplication
Case Syncretism WALS No syncretism
Syncretism in Verbal Person/Number Marking WALS Not syncretic
Gevey verbs don't agree with their subject for person or physical gender, only for subject 'status' and number.

Nominal Categories

Number of Genders WALS Two
Gevey nouns are divided into two classes: 'causative' nouns, and 'applicative' nouns. The division is lexical, and unmarked.
» 'causative' nouns can act as the subject of any verb taking the active construction
» an 'applicative' noun cannot act as the subject of a verb taking the active construction - where an applicative verb is the subject of a clause, the verb must take either the incidental or stative construction.
Sex-based and Non-sex-based Gender Systems WALS Non-sex-based
Gevey divides nouns into classes based on an animacy hierarchy:
» 'causative' nouns - people, animals, spiritual entities, physical (often cataclysmic) natural events, some body parts, emotions
» 'applicative' nouns - everything else

The sexual gender of a noun, if required, can be demonstrated by adding a gender particle to the noun (or pronoun). Verbs and modifiers are not affected by the sexual gender of their subject or head noun
